London League unbeaten run shudders to a halt.

17 Jan 2018 – Streatham & Brixton 2    (7 – 3)   Ilford 1

Ilford’s unbeaten London League record this season came to a juddering halt with a 3-7 loss to Streatham. Their captain had got out the strongest team he could to endeavour to break Streatham’s run of losses and they out-graded Ilford but not by a great deal, however, it was one of those evenings where not much went for Ilford with only Julian winning. Paolo drew against Ilford’s past long-serving captain John and we welcomed Kevin back with his first team appearance this season.

Ilford keep on in the London League

In the Metropolitan 1 away match Ilford are 5-4 up with Steve Abbott’s game adjourned which looks difficult to hold – see position below. The teams were evenly matched and it was close fought.

Tom Barton’s game was the last to finish. A ding dong affair he was worse but managed to mix it up and with both his opponent and he queening he had an opportunity to win the game in the final time scramble – then he went and put his queen en pris! Aaaagh!

Still, Ilford will at least halve the match and continue to add to the points tally.

Steve Abbott’s adjourned position. He is black and has sealed:

Les got the evening off to a good start catching his young opponent in an opening trap and our strength in depth saw a clean sweep of the bottom half of the boards the foundation of the win.

Thanks to Chris and Gary for taking on the top boards against high rated opponents.

LAVANAN AINKARAN  0-1  PHIL STANILAND 160

A strong Wanstead 1st team turned up outgrading us on every board, but games were played out to a tough finish.

Syd Kalinsky easily held Hunnable’s French Defence but Neville on top board had to work hard to draw with Spearman. I misplayed the opening in a cramped position and in spite of seeking counter-play, it was too difficult to hold off Steve Rix, whilst Wanstead captain Staniland proved too strong for Lavanan. Similarly Tony Kent couldn’t prevent Marden gaining control of the centre and opening up his defence. Our only winner was Tom, who is having a good season, who broke out of the middle game to win the ending.

Ilford hammered by Basildon in Summer Rapidplay K.O.

Rapidplay: Ilford 1½-8½ Basildon

The score says it all really. Ilford’s top board, Neville, got stuck in a motorway traffic jam and hence missed the first round but Ilford were never in contention in this match faring little better in round 2. So Ilford depart this year’s Essex summer K.O.tournament.

London League: Ilford finish 6th

With Gary Thurston agreeing a draw in his adjourned game Ilford has drawn it’s final match against Wanstead & Woodford.

With all matches in Divison 2 now complete Ilford’s final position at the end of the season is 6th with 6 from 11 match points which is a good return. The team has generally out-performed on grading and played tenaciously as evidenced by the four drawn matches achieved, including draws against the two top teams, Cavendish and Wanstead & Woodford. Ilford will be in Division 2 again next season and Tom Barton intends to continue as captain.  See the London League web-site for full details: http://www.londonchess.org.uk/main.php
