Ilford v Barking Time control: 15min + 10sec/move
The first of a double-header of matches against Barking on the same night and it turned into a grim one for Ilford. In this first match we were completely outplayed in both rounds which was agreed to be a rare 7-board match. Barking turned out their strongest team & I have added all their players rapidplay grades to show their strength in depth. Tom, Rahul and Venkatesh were our only players to come out of the carnage with credit; Anurag and Daniel found it very hard going as did Neville on board one.
One of our players (‘Simon Trelawney’) has just had a Sherlock Holmes mystery published- not sure if even he could solve this problem of how to win!

Ilford v Barking Time control: 15min + 10sec/move
After our trouncing in the 1st match, this 2nd match of the double-header turned out to be much closer than I expected. We were crushed in the first round but we turned the tables and won the 2nd round- a very good result. After the 7-board match this was agreed to be 5-boards each. We also agreed to change the board order in the 2nd round to give our players a new opponent to face and it clearly worked for us. It wasn’t planned but I stepped in as a late sub. It was a heavy night of chess as with the increment of 10-seconds a move many games went the full distance. And in this match at least all our players scored at least 1 point or a ½.
Great Thanks to those who played all 4 games- a heavy night of rapid chess, as we didn’t finish till near 11pm, and Tom and Rahul scored 1½ points overall. We won’t do this again too often (!), though it did save us the cost of hiring our room for another night. In all probability we will now go into the Plate competition for 1st round losers of this Essex cup competition.
